What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard internet protocol for
transferring files from one computer to another. FTP is used on DART to
copy your web page files to our server.
Most modern web page software will use FTP to publish your pages.

Windows XP and Vista
Folders
The built in networking for both Windows XP and VISTA can connect a
folder to our FTP server. These work just like any folder on
your hard drive, you can cut/copy/paste and drag-and-drop files. To
launch the network setup wizard:
In XP: 1. Select
"My Network Places" from the START
menu, or from the
"Other Places" sidebar of
the My Computer desktop icon.
2. In the Network Tasks sidebar, select "Add a
network place"
VISTA: 1. Select
START > Computer
2. Under the hard drives panel RIGHT CLICK, then select
"Add a
Network Location" from the
pop-up menu.
In the setup wizard, Click on "Choose Another Network Location"
When asked for the network address type ftp://ftp.dart.rexx.com
UN-CHECK the "Log on anonymously" box and enter your DART username.

FTP Client Programs
Basic FTP Client programs such as WS-FTP and FileZilla can also
be used to upload your website files to DART. The most common
information needed (besides your username and password) to login is:
Host Name/Address: ftp.dart.rexx.com
Host Type: Automatic
is best, Unix(Standard)
or Unix/BSD
Remote Directory: Usually you can leave
this BLANK, Some software may want you to enter a single Tilde (~) or a forward slash and
your username (/username)

Publishing Software
Settings
For most web page authoring and publishing programs, they will ask for
the "Publishing Address" when you click on the PUBLISH Button.
Publishing Address: ftp://ftp.dart.rexx.com/username
HTTP Address: http://dart.rexx.com/~username

Firewalls
Firewalls can (and usually will) block FTP transfers. The solution is
to reverse the connection, by turning on (or off) PASSIVE MODE FTP.
For
XP and VISTA Folders: START > CONTROL PANEL > Internet
Settings > ADVANCED ... Find the check box marked "Use Passive FTP"
(It is about half way down the list.)
For
WS-FTP: "Passive Transfers" is located in the advanced tab of
the
window where you enter the host name and your username and password.
Microsoft
Front Page: "Passive FTP" is located in the remote web site
properties.
(NOTE that this is only available in the 2003 edition or newer.
Microsoft did not include a way to set passive mode in earlier
editions.)
